Platts Canadian Western Red Spring Wheat FOB Vancouver basis values were heard lower on May 17 against falling demand.
The Minneapolis Grain Exchange spring wheat July futures contract settled the session 9.25 cents/bushel lower at $7.115/bu. Futures closed lower for the fourth consecutive session and ended the week with a net loss of 8.5 cents/bu. Futures lacked supportive news to hold early week increases and technical selling weighed on values.
Weekly Canadian grain export data showed 493,800 mt shipped in the week ended May 12, down 18% from the previous week, according to Canadian Grain Commission data released after the close on May 16.
FOB Vancouver CWRS basis values continued their downtrend with bid-offer ranges heard 10 cents/bu lower across the board compared to the previous session.
Demand has been weak for fresh export sales and saw little activity when futures were trending higher. Farmers had already made significant sales volumes and were less price sensitive as they looked forward to new crop prospects.
“Sometimes price doesn’t matter at that time of year, it’s just a matter of emptying out the bins to make space,” a source said. “As long as things are still profitable.”
