Beef Commentary

  • Higher demand to US, MENA markets support Brazilian beef prices
  • Increased China beef stocks limit resurgence of demand
  • US cattle placed into feedlots in March down 7.6% on month
  • US cattle marketed in March down 4.9% on month, 13.7% on year

Platts assessed Brazil Beef Marker FCA Santos unchanged April 19 at $4,275/mt. Despite no confirmed market activity on the day, Brazilian beef prices were reported as supported on the week by heated demand from US and Middle East North Africa countries. A favorable exchange rate between the Brazilian real and the US dollar also helped to boost high trade activity throughout the week.

According to market participants, the positive impacts of the weaker Brazilian real against the US dollar are starting to be mitigated as beef importers soften their bids. On the other hand, live cattle prices on the cash market rose, reflecting the more favorable market conditions for exporting. Still, the beef processors' demand for ready-to-harvest cattle is set to the current beef demand, limiting an upward trend, a source added.

A market source reported that more favorable price conditions to the Middle East and North Africa and the US market are helping to increase the output flow, but if the expected pullback in Chinese demand is confirmed, it is likely to lead to a beef oversupply in the domestic market for the following months. China-based beef buyers are less active on imports due to increased stocks and pressured prices as consumers seek more affordable proteins, such as pork and poultry.

The US imported lean beef market was quiet April 19 amid higher US boxed beef values for the domestic market.

Ninety loads of US boxed beef cuts were traded the morning of April 19, 0.13 cent/lb higher at $2.96/lb for choice grade and 1.80 cent/lb higher at $2.91/lb for select grade, the US Department of Agriculture said in its morning National Daily Boxed Beef Cuts negotiated sales report.

US beef prices have drawn support from the tight cattle supply, seasonal demand, and by concerns of possible disruption of the flow of fed cattle to the slaughterhouses due to the bovine influenza A virus, or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, detection in dairy milking cattle.

“Despite experts having said at this point the risk of any disruption in the movement of cattle is very low, imported beef market participants have followed fears of a possible complication in the movement of cattle and have been buying all they can,” a beef export trader said.

The number of US cattle placed into feedlots during March 2024 totaled 1.746 million head, down 7.6% from 1.890 million head placed in February, the US Department of Agriculture said April 19 in its Cattle on Feed report. The number was below the average of analysts’ estimates at 1.84 million head.

The number of US cattle marketed during March 2024 totaled 1.706 million head, down 4.9% from 1.793 million head marketed in February, and 13.7% from the 1.977 million head marketed during March 2023, the USDA said.

The number of US cattle marketed during March, reported by the USDA, was below the average of analysts’ estimates at 1.75 million head.
