Platts assessed Chinese copper import premiums at $120/metric ton plus London Metal Exchange cash, CIF China, on Oct. 7, for LME-registered normal brands of electrolytically-refined cathode, unchanged from Sept. 30.
The EQ cathode was assessed at $58/mt on Oct. 7, up $3/mt from Sept. 30. The top ER brand differential was assessed at $15/mt, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning differential was assessed at minus $5/mt.
Bids and offers were subdued during the week due to the absence of Chinese participants, while market sentiment remained stable.
SX-EW cathode was heard to have been transacted at $105/mt in the week of Oct. 2, for October loading and pricing.
CCCP was heard transacted at $135/mt on a warrants basis, for October pricing. EQ cathodes were heard transacted at $50-$70/mt, depending on quality and origin, before the holiday in China.
"There should be no changes during the week," a Singapore-based trader said.
As the market expected, supply will remain tight in the fourth quarter, supporting the cathode premium.
"We shall see whether domestic premiums in China remain supported after the holiday, as they are key to supporting copper arbitrage into China," another trader said.
Restocking was observed in Southeast Asia as market participants sourced material to fulfill term contracts.
"Demand from end users is relatively quiet," a smelter source said.
Trades were heard at $110/mt for ER cathodes on a CIF Southeast Asia basis, for Indonesia-origin material.
